The Spirit of Summer: Confidence & Joy


Back in the day when I was a cheerleader, we used to have a cheer that went something like this:

"Smile, Sparkle,  Shine it gets 'em every time-
Smile. (clap)  Sparkle. (clap) Shine!"

(ummm... yes, i still remember the words and the movements!) 

Now that we are in the heat of summer- the season of the FIre Element-  that cheer has bubbled up from the recesses of my memory.  Why? Because that what the Fire Element represents in us:  the ability to sparkle and shine just like the summer Sun long into the evening hours. 


In the summer flowers blossom into their unique beauty and glory, just as our Fire element

controls our ability to share the uniqueness of our being with the world. Our hair, our personal style, our posture, and even the sound of our voice can convey to others:  i love being me! 

Fire's emotion is joy, an expansive energy that reaches out to embrace all it touches.   Summer is alive and vibrant as we connect with our friends and head outdoors for concerts, parties and other social events. Joy is contagious- and the Fire Element allows us to radiate joy to everyone in our presence.







When Fire is out of balance, we may experience  low-self-esteem or a lack of confidence. Jealousy or suspicion may sneak in. When we envy the "shine" of others, our own light diminishes. we may find our selves turning down invitations to party in favor of being alone.     While solitude is a natural and healthy state of being for some people, when Fire is involved this seclusion can come along with feelings of rejection, shame, or "wanting to hide".
 

A Fire imbalance can also manifest as being too social- seeking excitement and pleasure after pleasure without a center to ground us.  Anxiety or restlessness may keep us from winding down- especially at night.   We may find ourselves out of touch with our innermost feelings, or easily swept away with the crowd or the desires of others.

SACRED TIP:   Heart- Centered Breathing
In Classical Chinese Medicine, our confidence comes not from our external looks or accomplishments, but from the acknowledgement of the divine within us.  Try this simple breathing exercise to reconnect to your sacred self:
Close your eyes.  Place one hand on your heart, and breathe as if you are breathing through your heart.  Repeat for several breaths until you feel calm and centered.
