The Spirit of Spring

Spring is a magical time of year.

The world seems to reawaken from it's peaceful, restorative winter slumber.   Fresh new life pushes upward through the soil, bursting from its seed of potential, stretching toward the sun, and flowering into its fullest expression.

The energy of the Spring is also within us, known as the Wood Element in Chinese Medicine.  The Wood Element fills us with inspiration for new projects, and a clear vision of our future.  Like the plant world, we are moved toward the fullest expression of ourselves, realizing our potential to walk our destined path.

If our Wood Element is out of balance, we may also notice the affects in the Spring.  The upward rising energy may manifest as a quick temper, irritability, or easily losing our patience.  Past resentments that were never resolved may resurface with a vengeance.    If our movement toward change has been blocked, we may feel frustrated or stuck.  Conflicts at work may force us to ask ourselves- are we walking our destined path?  Are we reaching our fullest potential?

A flower never questions its right to reach toward the sun.  Instead, it responds with a balance ofstrength and flexibility until it fulfills its destiny as a flower- its unique signature in the world.  Here are a few great ways to keep your Wood element balanced this season:

1) BODY:  Practice Yoga The Wood element is responsible for the free-flow of energy through our bodies, so movement helps.  If you have lots of energy or anger, try hot yoga to blow off some steam.  Try Yin Yoga or other restorative forms if you need to cultivate relaxation or more flexibility. CLICK HERE to learn about the  different kinds of yoga and what style may be right for you.

2) MIND: Keep a Journal
If anger, frustration, or resentment are swelling up inside, try keeping a journal so you can get clear on what you're feeling.  Make a chart with what is stressing you out on one column, and list all of the possible ways to address it on the other side.  Then make a positive plan of action. Moving forward will keep you from feeling stuck or helpless.

3) SPIRIT: Make a Vision BoardThe Wood Element is fueled by our  imagination, so break out your magazines or download some great images that remind you of where you're headed.  If you don't have extra magazines lying around, try this interactive website where you can make a "digital" vision board with images, affirmations, and music.
