Autumn Spirit pt. 2: Present Presence

I absolutely love the Fall.  I associate this season with everything from the crisp autumn air, the beautiful leaves, a scent in the air that reminds me of football, fall fashion, and the season premieres marking the long-awaited return of my favorite shows. Taoist philosophy has a completely different set of associations -  every season corresponds to an element, a climate, certain foods, emotions and even functions of the body.
In this ancient tradition, the Autumn corresponds to the Metal Element.  As we discussed in last month's article, the Metal element relates to creating a structure and organization for all things.   Like the precious metals that enrich the earth, Metal affords us the ability to recognize the preciousness of our earthly experience.  We are able to perceive the inherent divinity of every person and event in our life.  It is about  breathing in the sacredness of each moment- and the moments that simply take our breath away.

When this aspect of Metal  is out of balance, we may find ourselves unable to find  inspiration.  Our desire to bring out divine perfection can lead to being hypercritical of ourselves and those we love most.   We use the sharpness of metal to cut down those around us, and find ourselves feeling cut off from the present with our constant attention on what could and should be better.

When our metal element is in balance, we are able to let go of the past and live fully in the present In the autumn, many people experience a heightened sense of loss for days gone by- whether it's for the loss of summer warmth and freedom, lost loved ones or relationships, or even loss of a sense of yourself or your dreams.   We feel stuck, and our inability to let go may manifest emotionally as sadness or grief, and physically as constipation or mucus (i.e. runny noses, coughs, and congestion).

Here are some tips for harmonizing your Metal Element this season:

1)  Take a Deep Breath
In Chinese Medicine, the lungs are one of the primary organs associated with Metal element.  It is no wonder that in spiritual traditions around the world, breathwork is part of spiritual practice. Why?  Because
it is the breath that brings us into the present moment Every breath we take is happening RIGHT NOW.   Try this 15-minute breathing exercise and meditation.  Or keep it simple: when ever you feel yourself becoming emotional, tired, or overwhelmed, take three... deep.... breaths.  aaahhhhh.

2) See Beauty & Inspiration
I am borrowing this "Picture of the Day" idea from Becky Higgins, via my sister-in-law.  For the next
My daughter's 'Pic of the Day: At the Playground
30 days, carry a camera, ipod, or smartphone with you.
Everyday, take a picture of one thing that inspires you or that you find interesting, beautiful or meaningful.  It doesn't have to be a major photo shoot, just a quick snapshot of things that are part of your everyday life, seen through a new "lens".  You'll be surprised how much beauty life has to offer!

3) Metal- Harmonizing Flower Essences
Flower essences can be a great tool for harmonizing the mental and emotional aspects of Metal element. Try Iris for inspiration, Beech if you're feeling overly critical, and Zinnia to help you enjoy the present moment. Or schedule a flower essence consultation to help you discover the Metal-harmonizing flowers that will best support your this season!
